#Spotlight – This week we continue our celebration of Women's History Month. Today is our tribute to the Women Owners of the Negro Leagues.
Effa Manley was not only the most well known female owner, but also the first women to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.
Effa Manley co-owned the Newark Eagles with her husband Abe from 1935 – 1946 & was the sole owner until 1948
Among the many things that Effa Manley pioneered, she worked to improve the condition of the players in the entire league including better scheduling, pay, and accommodations. Her players traveled in an air-conditioned bus.
In 2010, her life was the subject of a children's book, She Loved Baseball: The Effa Manley Story, written by Audrey Vernick and illustrated by Don Tate.
Olivia Taylor was the wife of the famous C. I Taylor with the Indianapolis ABCs. She took over the team in 1922 after his death.
Henryene Green took over the Baltimore Elite Giants after her husband died in 1949
Hilda Bolden-Shorter took over running the Philadelphia Stars from her father Ed. She ran the team until Eddie Gottlieb bought out her interest.
Minnie Forbes - owned the Detroit Stars from 1956-58. She bought the team from her uncle Ted Rasberry who also owned the Kansas City club
