This week we continue our celebration of Black History Month, looking back at the impact of African Americans on our National Pastime with “Baseball Firsts”.

The 1954 Brooklyn Dodgers would showcase the first black majority team when five of their nine players would take the field against the Braves on July 17th, 1954 – Jim Gilliam (2B), Jackie Robinson (3B), Sandy Amoros (LF), Roy Campanella (C) Don Newcombe (P)

1955 Would see Roy Campanella become the first black player to win three MVP awards (1951, 1953 & 1955)

1956 Don Newcombe would win the Cy Young becoming the first black awarded and following Jackie Robinson in winning an award in the first year that it was created.
